Love Themes from "The Flop House"

It's flop motif season, motherf*ckers!

Top Plug of the Week

Flop TV kicked off this past weekend with our discussion of The Adventures of Pluto Nash, as well as a stylish introduction from Stuart, an Elliott presentation that had me wheezing, and a patented “no way to know where THIS is headed” special report from Dan. But just because you missed it live doesn’t mean it’s lost to time! A ticket purchase means you can watch on demand all through the Flop TV season!

A montage of merriment.

Theme Perks

We’re entering “theme month” season here at The Flop House podcast. This Saturday we’ll celebrate the first “Smalltember” episode (or “Smallvember,” depending on which sect of Flophousian you are). October is, of course, “Shocktober,” which we’ll mark with our usual horror movie discussions and the return of Hallie Haglund.

AND, this year, we’ll be doing a THIRD THEME MONTH in November!

Will the November theme become an annual tradition like the others? No promises. We’re saving the details for a grand reveal later. For now, consider yourself FULLY TEASED.

And now, to waste space/your time, here are some rejected Flop House theme months! Some claim they were never actually considered for the podcast, and are just silly bullshit Dan made up, but who would listen to such slanderous nonsense?

FLANuary — All movies in which flan is mentioned, starting with Wag the Dog, the film which gave us William H. Macy delivering the immortal line “There are two things I know to be true. There's no difference between good flan and bad flan, and there is no war.

FEDSuary - Remember the 1988 movie Feds, starring Rebecca DeMornay and Mary Gross? We just watch that over and over.

MERCH - We forget movies for a while and just try to sell leftover merch we weren’t able to unload at live shows.

TAPEril - Forget movies! What’s on this weird self-labeled VHS tape I found in a box on the street? Let’s just pop it in— oh god! Oh no! Oh god!

MAYbe - …we just skip a month? Take a vacation? We never do that, guys. I’m tired.

JUNEo - Like FEDSuary, except we watch Juno.

YOULIE - We make up bullshit movies and then review them. You’ll never know the difference. I mean, Heartbeeps — that can’t be real, right? And Poolman? Did you hear that synopsis? Just a bunch of nonsense!

HOGust - We get high on the hog, with an exploration of pig movies! Babe! Gordy! Babe 2! Pig! Piglet! Piglet’s Big Movie! Uh… Porky’s! You get the idea!

Smalltember/Shocktober/Still-to-be-revealed November theme month - Already extant.

DEEcember - All Dee Snider’s Strangeland, all the time!

Next on the Podcast

9/13 - We welcome esteemed guest Ashlie Atkinson (known for her roles in The Gilded Age, BlacKkKlansman, Mr. Robot, The Lost Bus — in theaters 9/19 — and much more!) to discuss our first Smalltember pick, LUMINA — the film that will have you asking the question, “What?” and “Did I miss something?”

With Ashlie, post-recording.

9/20 - In this mini, Dan casts Elliott and Stuart in the role of The Producers-style grifters, who must figure out ways to take some of Hollywood’s biggest hits and turn them into flops!

Plugging Away

Dan is a contributing editor for DEATHBED, a new project from friend-of-the-show Ritch Duncan. The elevator pitch is: “Horror stories by comedy writers.” Read it here, or sign up to have new installments emailed to you directly! He was also on the Talking Simpsons podcast recently, and that previously-paywalled episode is now available for everyone!

Elliott’s book on comedy writing, “JOKE FARMING,” won’t be out until November, but you can pre-order it now, while we still have an economy! He’s also still writing  Harley Quinn and hosting/writing the quiz podcast Smartless Presents: Clueless.

Stuart paints Warhammer models/chats with viewers most Fridays on his Twitch channel, and his wife Sharlene’s body positive gym, JIGGLE STUDIO, is now open in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park! If you live in the area, and are reading this newsletter on the day of release, Friday 9/12, come on by for their grand opening party!

You Made it to the End!

Here’s a messy wide-angle shot of us recording an ALL NEW batch of THREE SLOPTALES ADVENTURES to be released on the Max Fun member bonus feed, later this year!
